Merry Reading! The Best Holiday Books for Kids

Merry christmas & happy reading

I feel like Christmas sneaks up on me every year. I don’t have all my decorations out until the night before, I can’t seem to pull gifts together until the last minute, and books about Christmas usually come from the check-out aisle at Tom Thumb. I was happy to volunteer for this post in order to get my act together this year. I love it when I find a good Christmas book that is fun for my kiddo and me to read together.

Telling the Story of Christmas

  1. Song of the Stars: A Christmas Story by Sally Lloyd Jones – This book is told from the perspective of the animals that were on earth when Jesus was born. It is beautifully illustrated and narrated and will be sure to speak to any child that has a love of animals.
  2. The Story of Christmas by Patricia Pingry – A great book for young toddlers and preschoolers. It helps explain why Christmas is Jesus’ birthday and why we give presents to each other on this special day.
  3. God Gave Us Christmas by Lisa Tawn Bergren – Being a Baylor family, I am always drawn to books about bears. This sweet tale is about a Little Cub who asks his Mama how to find Santa. They set out on an adventure that leads them to find God and the best gift of all – Jesus.
  4. Santa’s Favorite Story by Hisako Aoki – In this book, we find Santa asleep in the forest. The animals find him and are worried that Christmas will not happen because he fell asleep. Santa assures them this is not possible and tells them the First Christmas story.
  5. Who Is Coming to our House? by Joseph Slate – The animals in the stable that first Christmas night are all excited about who is coming to stay with them. Read as they get ready and talk about the big event.

The Holiday Spirit

  1. Little Blue Truck’s Christmas by Alice Schertle – I love the Little Blue Truck books so when I found out they had a Christmas edition, I knew it was going to make this list. In this story, Little Blue Truck spreads holiday cheer by delivering Christmas trees to all of his animal friends.
  2. The Three Snow Bears by Jan Brett – Do you love the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears? If so, then this is a holiday must for you. Change the names and the setting and you have a super cute story about a curious girl, snow dogs, and three bears.
  3. The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore & Roger Duvoisin – A classic Christmas story that everyone probably has a copy of in their house this time of year. I love this particular version because the shape of the book is different (would fit inside a stocking) and the organization of the words keeps you turning the pages. In other words, you aren’t on the same page for too long so you won’t lose your toddler (maybe I am the only one with that problem). I also love this touch and feel version.
  4. Why Christmas Trees Aren’t Perfect by Richard H. Schneider – Travel along as Small Pine discovers why being perfect is not what makes a great Christmas tree. This book delivers a beautiful message about the holiday spirit of love and charity toward friends and family.
  5. Christmas Farm by Mary Lyn Ray – Wilma enlists the help of her five year-old neighbor to start a Christmas tree farm. Read about their hard work and dedication to bring joy to families in the form of beautiful Christmas trees.
