Love My Local: Lake Country

Twenty-eight years ago, my husband and I were two teenagers strolling along the shore of a distant lake daydreaming of the day when we would buy a house on a lake and live happily every after. We married when I was 18 and he was 19 years old, therefore, our dream of living on a lake had to wait until much later, but it was a dream we held in our hearts.

When we first learned we might be moving to Fort Worth, we decided to drive down to see what lay in store for us. On that trip, my husband surprised me with a trip to Eagle Mountain Lake, and that is when I fell in love with Lake Country. For me, this location was love at first sight for a plethora of reasons. We found Eagle Mountain Lake to be all we had hoped for in a lakeside community. In fact, it seems the longer I live here the more I find to love.

On our first visit, I fell in love with the rolling hills, winding streets, uniquely built beautiful homes, and, of course, the views of the lake, all nestled into the forest of old oaks that cover the yards. Since we moved here, I have found much more to love.

I know of very few neighborhoods that enjoy the history that Lake Country has. Even to this day, there are residents whose names most people would know if I were to call them. One of my favorite things to do is simply take a walk. Usually, while I’m walking I meet neighbors with stories to tell about life in Lake Country from years gone by. Amazingly, most residents have lived here since the 70s or 80s. Therefore, there is a charm about this place that you don’t feel in newer neighborhoods. People know each other; they have memories together which creates a cozy community unto itself.

One of my favorite stories is from a neighbor who grew up living in a waterfront home. He told me, he used to skip school to go sailing with some of his classmates. He still lives on the waterfront and he still has a sailboat. It’s little meetings like that, that make living here an experience, rather than simply existing.

Also, we have wonderfully quaint neighborhood events. Every year we have a 4th of July parade. We love to sit on our balcony and watch the parade pass as we wave flags while the kids wait in the front yard for candy to be thrown from the floats.

We also have a children’s fishing tournament, Easter egg hunt, movie night, Santa visits every Christmas, and much more. We also have our own neighborhood magazine, and neighborhood communication via an app that allows us to post items for sale, lost and found animals, and other important information.

Life in Lake Country is about more than just living on a beautiful lake — it’s about living in an exemplary community where the history is rich, the neighbors are friendly, and life is good. Living here is a real dream come true.
