Confession: I am not a researcher. I never researched my kids’ preschools other than “nearest my house.” I don’t research strollers, sunscreens, or discipline strategies. So, you’re gonna be somewhat shocked when I tell you this: I researched an outdoor play set for two solid years.
Why? It felt like an investment and something I wanted to last our family for years to come . . . . and quite frankly, I was more worried about the safety of a play set than I am about a stroller.
Please do not let my questionable research skills and priorities deter you, however. I’ve done the reading and filtering and asking around and “reviewing” for you, and I’m here to tell you WHY our family chose Backyard Fun Factory as the builder of our play set.
At the end of the day, two things were most important: quality and safety. If you’ve even gently browsed outdoor playgrounds, you know the price can get steep — even from the big box stores. My goal became getting the best quality product to make the investment last with the best safety for my kids.
Strong as a Redwood
It sounds a smidge silly, but I could “just tell” the play sets were sturdy by the photos and reviews, along with the list of products used. I was convinced of that assumption once I toured the show room.
Here are all the reasons why Backyard Fun Factory gets my vote for great quality:
- Each play set uses 100 percent California Redwood, which is super durable and takes whatever the kiddos (literally) throw its way. They are strong as a redwood tree — no shaking and swaying.
- Our set is braced in the ground in four different places.
- The swings are secured with heavy-duty hangers.
- All hardware is galvanized.
- The brackets, handles, and rungs are powder-coated.
- No nails or staples are used to hold it together. Everything is screwed or bolted together — like a redwood, y’all.
- All floors are built using screws from the bottom side to reduce splinter pockets on the top.
- It’s because of all this structure that Backyard Fun Factory can offer a lifetime guarantee. Hello, I’m not replacing this beauty in two years.
It will take an act of nature to bring down this play set. Bring on the neighborhood kids; we can take it!
Which brings me to . . . the benefit of a custom option. Our backyard is on the smaller side with a beautiful tree smack dab in the middle. Many of the pre-boxed play sets simply didn’t fit in our parameters. The Backyard Fun Factory came out to our yard, took measurements, listened to what we wanted, and then created something that fit our space, ages, and interests. To me, that goes hand-in-hand with the quality of the product.
We will get maximum use out of the set because it is with a higher deck height and fixtures that appeal to my girls. They won’t outgrow it soon; they will grow into it. The deck heights come in all sizes — up to seven feet! The girls had a say in what features we included, like a rock wall and tree house. All of this means more use for the play set!
We maximized our small space, and Backyard Fun Factory did not turn its nose up at that. Our custom project was not a large one, but the staff gave us as much attention as if we were purchasing a massive playground. This kind of quality matters!
Safety First
I know kids will get a few injuries (hopefully minor) from a play set, but I did not want those injuries to come from the hazards of a deterioting product or the hazards of hardware and splinters. The Backyard Fun Factory won me over with its attention to safety:
- All edges are rounded to reduce splintering.
- Hardware is recessed so that no one scrapes the metal.
- Soft edges on all aspects of the build.
Unexpected Bonuses
There were a few items to pleasantly surprise me after our play set was installed:
- The play set is big enough for mom and dad . . . and I am LOVING the swings. We find ourselves outside together as a family after dinner more and more. I catch my husband swinging with one of the girls. Heck, even the babysitter was in the tree house the other day. It is also attracting our neighbor friends, and I love that. You can hear the birds chirping, our cat meowing, and now so many people laughing and playing in our backyard.
