Resources and Organizations

It truly takes a village to raise a child. Fort Worth Moms has taken the initiative to make sure you know about local resources and organizations that offer support for families raising kids with disabilities. No parent has to go it alone!  

Check out the organizations below, and be sure to take a look at our article, “Activities for Kids with Differences and Disabilities in the Fort Worth Area.”

Access-Life Expo in North Texas (Grapevine) — This annual meet-up for individuals and families living with disabilities provides outdoor fun, food, and fellowship. The next one is scheduled for September 10, 2022.

Autism Parent Training at Camp Worth (Fort Worth) — Here is an actual training program to help parents better serve their children with autism. Parents learn skills to help build communication, decrease negative behaviors, and teach their children coping skills to better manage social scenarios.

Connections Project (Dallas/Fort Worth) — The motto here is “The Special Needs Kids’ Directory.” Search for educational, medical, nutritional, recreational, therapeutic, and other parental and family resources in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.

ESC Region 11 (White Settlement) — ESC Region 11 is an education service center for public and charter schools in the area. Along with professional development for teachers, its workshops are also open to parents and it has a lot of autism resources.

HopeKids — This organization provides a wide range of free weekly events for families of kids with life-threatening medical conditions.

The Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Council of Tarrant County — This non-profit serves Fort Worth and the surrounding areas, providing disability resources for all ages. Check out this great resource of recreational activities in the area.

Links of Hope (Fort Worth) — This local support group provides parents of children with behavioral and emotional concerns such as ADHD, depression, OCD, and ASD with support and education. The group is led by a licensed social worker and they meet once a month. 

Miller Speech LEAPS program (Fort Worth) — Here’s a group designed for parents of young children that teaches them to use language support strategies at home to improve communication.

MHMR of Tarrant County — The My Health My Resources (MHMR) is a non-profit providing Tarrant and surrounding counties with behavioral health, disability, and child and family services.   

Respite Nights for Parents — Various churches and specialty services offer respite care for children with disabilities (and sometimes their typically developing siblings). This can range from a free parents’ night out to regular day care services. Check out this list provided by Tarrant Cares, or ask your home church.

 

Victory Flows — This organization puts on lots of fun events for people with disabilities and their families.
