Our children’s bedrooms are often the most difficult rooms to decorate. They have to be the most functional, safe, and fun rooms in the house — that can be a serious challenge when you put your decorator hat on. Most important, we want their bedrooms to be comfortable for them and a place they love to be. As we all know, they’ll pick lime green paint if given a choice. And that race car bed? Sign them up!
If you’re looking for a few ideas to spruce up your little one’s room, look no further. These are three, DIY projects that are very easy to make, inexpensive, and they won’t keep you up late at night painting or sewing.
Wall Library
Have you seen these on Pinterest? I’m sure you have, and let me tell you they are all they’re cracked up to be. A wall library is a nice alternative to hanging another picture, it keeps those pretty books away from baby hands, and it’s very easy to accomplish. I chose to make mine from Ikea picture ledges, but I’ve even seen them made from rain gutters. Also, you don’t have to just display books — alphabet letters, small stuffed animals, or picture frames are all great additions. Whatever you choose to build your library with, make sure it’s secured safely to the wall and that you don’t exceed the recommended weight limit.
Ceiling Canopy
This is one of my favorite DIY projects to date. It really makes a statement in my daughter’s room, and the first time she saw it she said, “Ohhhh! Wow!” — best compliment ever. This might look like a girl’s only piece, but it’s not. If you use a fun, boy-friendly printed fabric and skip the frilly ribbon you’re set. Also, hang it over his train set or building blocks and it suddenly becomes a fort instead of a canopy.
I made mine in four easy steps:
- Thread two sheer curtain panels over the outer ring of an embroidery hoop.
- Tie three, even pieces of ribbon or string at equal intervals on the inner ring of the hoop.
- Secure the two hoops back together with the included screw.
- Hang from the ceiling with a simple, screw hook.
Storybook Art
Gallery walls are always fun, especially in children’s rooms, but it’s often hard to find pictures to fill all those frames. You want the pieces to be unique and fun, but most important, easy to find or create. I’m calling this framed piece in my daughter’s room her “storybook art.” It is a framed page from the book Runaway Bunny, and I adore it. To make it, I simply bought an oversized, story time book at Half Price Books and framed my chosen page. Easy enough right?
How have you decorated your child’s room? Do you find it to be the most challenging room in the house to spruce up?
Love it! Sooo cute in her room!
