Parenting

Being a parent is a huge privilege and a demanding role, all tied up in one. The category of Parenting features articles to encourage and equip parents in every season and from every walk of life –from mom of teens and toddlers to working and stay-at-home moms — as well as tips, hacks, inspiration, and resources in Fort Worth that every parent needs to know about.

Fort Worth Moms publishes original, personal stories and advice from local moms, as well as relevant and fun information for those of us in the trenches of parenthood.

Every blog post published via Fort Worth Moms — whether someone from our in-house team, a guest writer, or a sponsored writer — uses their words to reflect their own opinions, experiences, and beliefs. No singular post or collection of posts represents the opinions, beliefs, or agenda of Fort Worth Moms.

My kids are some of those people who carry music inside of them. They dance when they talk, hum while they play, and listen to the music in the background of restaurants. Part of my job as a parent is to embrace that gift and enhance it.
But, I've gotta tell you . . . there is something to the bickering that adds dimension to their relationships. In their jockeying for position or insistence on being right, they're figuring out what it means to resolve conflict. Bickering often happens when they're bored, and since I believe that boredom is good for kids, I think what they do when they're bored can be too (there are exceptions, including, but not limited, to painting desks with nail polish and cutting bangs up to the hairline).
Without good men who step up and choose to love not just their own children, but also the children of others, our society would quickly crumble.
Sports and other activities have moved away from experience to expectation. And, my generation has encouraged this type of thinking because we've wanted you guys to feel good. We don't want to keep score, or only issue trophies to the winning team because that would feel unfair. For goodness sake, what have we done to our kids? We think we're protecting you, but what are we teaching you about life?

This Is How We Summer

I believe in summers that aren't always scheduled and where kids can get bored. I'm also a fan of little adventures and getting out and about, even if it's not planned in advance. I have found that a little preparation during the summer allows me to have more of a "go with the flow" attitude and say "yes" to my kids more often. In our house, that means keeping a few things ready to go.
I boldly declare that I am a yelling mom and have made my peace with it. I am here to welcome, with open arms, those of you who are audibly-gifted and parent your children as such.
The dangers for mothers and growing children to base self worth by living a life based on "likes" from social media.
