I've challenged myself to keep an active inventory of my thoughts and to stop any thought that desires what someone else has. In place of that thought, I'm working on telling myself: I am happy for so-and-so. Our lives are not the same, and I don't know all the details of so-and-so's life. I am so grateful for what I have. God, please give me the things that are the best for my life.
Honestly, it doesn't matter how you journal -- but as a daughter who very much appreciates the journals her mom kept, I encourage you to keep a record of your life somehow. I've been amazed at some of the things I've learned about my mom and the influence she had in how I parent my kiddos everyday.
You see, becoming a mother isn't always about remembering who you were before. Sometimes it's about finding who you are now. I don't know where my passions will lead me in the long run. Maybe I'll be a doula forever, or maybe I'll go back to school to become a midwife. Who knows. One thing is for sure: Becoming a mother didn't take away my identity.
It’s important that you understand true “mom strength” isn’t something you gain by simply becoming a mom or buying the T-shirt. You will be tested time and time again, and you'll feel like those tests are breaking you, but in fact, they're strengthening your will and emotions. You will watch your children suffer, watch them fail, and say no a schmillion times -- but eventually you’ll gain your footing and your confidence as a mom, and you’ll become emotionally stronger than you ever imagined . . . but it’s not a painless process.
Revealing a client's images to her is amazing because I get to see that moment when it clicks for her. That “OH MY GOSH . . . that’s me!” moment. (And no, I don’t alter body shape or change what a person looks like.) It’s my absolute favorite. You can see in that instant, she understands she is absolutely sexy.
Most days, I don't regret having my tubes tied -- but today, I do.
Eventually you will transition from mommy to mom, and when you do, you'll want to make sure you still know who you are beyond that title.
