Juneteenth is the celebration of the end of slavery in Texas. Also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day, it is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. Originating in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, it is now celebrated annually on June 19 throughout the United States. It is a time that commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement.
