Back in 2002 when my husband and I started to search for our first house to buy, we decided to build in Lake Worth. At that time it was still relatively small and somewhat close to the country. We were close to the lake and country side, but just down the road from the “city life.” We had the best of both worlds.
Fast forward 14 years, and Lake Worth has hit a tremendous growth spurt. When we first moved here, Highway 199 was a not heavily traveled stretch of road that connected us to the urban area. Now, Highway 199 can easily become stop-and-go, bumper-to-bumper traffic at just the right time each day.
We have grown to love this part of town. Since becoming “Lake Worthians,” we have welcomed three children into our family. Our little family has made many a memories out and about the area. Here are some of our favorites.
Eagle Mountain Park
Tucked away off the main road is a gorgeous 400-acre park filled to the brim with nature, wildlife, and hiking trails. At Eagle Mountain Park you will find six different hiking trails with some hills and elevated climbs. It all overlooks beautiful Eagle Mountain Lake. There is even a spot that local photographers flock to capture those treasured outdoor portrait sessions. The best part of it all: It is FREE! You won’t be disappointed with this “hidden gem!”
Jobo’s Hamburger Grill
If you want a good burger, head to Jobo’s Hamburger Grill. It is kid friendly with dominoes available to occupy the littles while you wait for your food to arrive. Freshly made hamburgers and delicious french fries are hard to turn down. After a long afternoon of shopping, it is a great place to stop and refuel. The owner is very friendly, and the fried pickles are a MUST!
Willow Creek Park
Willow Creek Park, a 65-acre park on the west edge of Saginaw is another local fave of ours. It has a 2.4 jogging/walking trail, volleyball and tennis courts, a lighted softball field, several different playground areas, and even a nine-hole disc course. If a family picnic is on the menu, you will find the perfect covered pavilions complete with bathroom facilities. The best part is that each spring, the Saginaw fire department hosts an amazing Easter egg hunt. They divide it into three age groups and have a host of prize eggs for the kids to find. The most recent addition to the park is a fenced dog park for our four-legged friends. A fantastic family friendly park you won’t want to miss!
JR’s Cafe
If a good home-cooked breakfast is what you are craving, then a stop by JR’s in Saginaw will be just what you need. Do not drive by this hole in the wall place that caters to the early morning and lunch crowds. Not an empty seat to be found on any given Saturday morning! Its pancakes are the size of serving platters. My kids couldn’t get enough for them. I usually opt for a delicious omelette and a piping hot cup of coffee. And anytime I don’t have to do the breakfast dishes is a WIN for mom!
Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge
If you venture down 199, you will find another area favorite: The Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge. The center is situated on 3,621 acres just on the outskirts of Lake Worth. It has more than 20 miles of hiking trails and native Texas wildlife. At the center you will find both self-guided or staff-guided hikes available. The staff provides amazing field trips for area schools, along with an indoor animal program, available for a fee. Admission to the Nature Center is $5 for adults and $2 for children. Children under 3 are free.
CVS, Lake Worth
Being a mom of child with a chronic health condition, we spend a lot of time back and forth to and from the pharmacy. We are often in the middle of a med change that requires us to stop and start several meds in a very short amount of time. I can always count on the pharm techs and pharmacists to greet me by name every time I walk through their door. They have taken real good care of us over the past five years.
On those rare not so rare times when I have a “frazzled mom” moment, I am reassured by their knowledge and patience. The pharmacists have called me several times over the years to make sure we were good on all of our son’s meds or to remind me that I have once again left my insurance card! Sabrina, Donna, and their awesome techs will take wonderful care of you. Stop by and give them a chance!
Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt
With fro yo all the rage these days, it helps to have the BEST place ever to fill that craving just minutes from your house. It is our go to place when we are celebrating those little things in life — the third grade play, the Christmas dance recital, or earning that yellow belt in karate. With up to 16 different flavors of fro yo to try, sampling them all before you decide is a must! There is a wide variety of toppings to select from on the self-serve bar. Favorites toppings at our house are the salted caramel rocks, fresh strawberries, and Fruity Pebbles. You can even earn free fro yo with their Ounce Back card loyalty card. Orange Leaf hits the spot on a blazing, hot summer day or any day in between!
