Motherhood can be hard to handle. Negative thoughts, especially while or after disciplining your child, can lead to critical self-talk, poor body image, strained relationships, depression, and anxiety. Sometimes it can feel like the world is on our shoulders and we have no way of getting out from underneath it. Sometimes the feeling of failure and “not good enough” can paralyze you.

However, there is a way to create a positive headspace and reclaim your inner dialogue. Creating a personal mantra is a simple and effective way to retrain your brain and regain positivity, focus, and clarity. This will help you keep your calm while handling tantrums and other tough times with your child.

Often used as a form of meditation, a mantra is a word or short phrase that is repeated often and with intention. It is a positive affirmation that allows you to stay focused on your goals and desires. When you state your intentions and revisit them on a consistent basis you are setting yourself up for success.

How Do You Create a Personal Mantra?

A personal mantra is meant to be repeated often throughout the day and will require a little bit of soul searching and self-reflection.

To begin, make a list of the attitude or mindset you would like to focus on and manifest. This can be anything from thinking more positive than negative thoughts throughout the day, having more patience, or bringing a sense of calm serenity into your life.

Once your list is complete, choose one to focus on. Spend some time brainstorming several words around your chosen attitude that create a sense of power and success within you.

Next, create a statement that begins with I. You are focusing on yourself and how you are going to change your own mindset, not on outside influences. I statements call from the power within yourself and allows your brain to turn its focus inward.

Finally, your statement can be a single word or a short phrase. Keeping your mantra short and sweet allows more direct focus and concentration. Long sweeping sentences with lots of adjectives are beautiful and have their place but will not hold the same power as a word or small phrase.

How Do You Use a Mantra?

Now that you have chosen your personal mantra, how do you incorporate it into your day-to-day life? Each person’s mantra journey is as unique as her word or saying, however, it is suggested to start slow and work your way up as you feel more comfortable. Begin by choosing a set time in the morning to say your mantra either out loud or in your head. Continue saying your mantra at the same time in the morning for several days until you no longer have to remind yourself. Once your mantra has become a morning habit, slowly add in additional times to recall your sang or phrase. Eventually, your mind will no longer need a schedule to incorporate your mantra into your day but will go to it naturally when needed.

Remember that your personal mantra can change and grow over time. Use what you have created as long as it serves you. Once you have achieved the desired goal or mood, revisit your list and decide if your meditative mantra needs to be adjusted.
